Near the gite
The area around Grand Fougueyrat offers a wide variety of sporting, leisure, historical and cultural activities.
For sports enthusiasts: rowing & canoeing, golf, cycling, walking & hiking, fishing and horse riding.
To stroll around: every day, a rural market is held in a different bastide. Visiting each of these bastides can allow you to mingle with the local life and admire the particular architecture of these different villages. Every weekend, flea markets and garage sales allow everyone to unearth little treasures.
For gourmets (and foodies): Bergerac is a paradise for wine lovers as vineyards and winemakers abound. The côteaux de Duras and those of Saint Emilion are also very close and the côteaux de Monbazillac are a stone's throw from Grand Fougueyrat. In addition to fine wines, the region is renowned for its production of foie gras and other goose and duck products. It is also one of the main truffle regions in France.
For those who love history, a one-hour scenic drive along the Dordogne River will take you to Les Eyzies, where "Cro-Magnon Man" was discovered. The museum is very informative showing how prehistoric tools and artworks were created. A little further east, in Montignac, you can admire the fabulous Lascaux caves. The beauty of the paintings is indescribable. The two sites make an excellent day trip. There is also an abundance of sites and castles to visit in this region where the Hundred Years' War was fought.
